Window Rot Repair

While replacing a client's frieze boards with rot-resistant PVC, we discovered significant rot under a window. Windows are often prone to rot if not installed properly, and although this client had their windows replaced previously, the contractor failed to inform him of the existing rot and did not apply proper water-sealing during the second installation. The installer had simply placed a piece of PVC board over the rotten sill to install the window. We advised the client that he should have been notified about the rot, and that the area beneath the window needed reframing due to severe damage. We repaired the damage by reframing the rotted areas, replaced the insulation using insulation client had on hand, replaced sheathing, properly water sealed the window framing, reinstalled the window and replaced the rotted cedar siding with new siding.

We did not complete the trim work on the existing windows, which were not installed with the recommended screws for PVC boards. During the process of uninstalling and reinstalling the window for the rot repair, we reused the existing trim but replaced the screws with the appropriate ones designed for PVC boards.
